Calendar: 3rd Annual Walk on the Wild Side™ 5K Walk
Saturday, October 11, at the San Diego Zoo
San Diegans of all ages and backgrounds will have the opportunity to take part in a unique tour of the world-famous San Diego Zoo before it opens to the public for the day! You will pass by many animal exhibits and be greeted by Zoo inhabitants such as flamingos, koalas, hippos, and, of course, our celebrity pandas! Walkers will also have the opportunity to meet our conservation ambassador, Joan Embery.
Each walker will be given an event T-shirt and goodie bag; after your walk, you'll be treated to healthy refreshments, live entertainment, and unique animal encounters and keeper talks. You will also be invited to attend a special expo with multiple sponsor and vendor booths.
This year’s 3rd annual event will be focused on raising funds for the 2008 Year of the Frog campaign to mark a major conservation effort to address the amphibian extinction crisis. Frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians are becoming extinct. In fact, the International Union of Conservation and Nature estimates that at least one-third of known amphibian species are threatened with extinction. While the major culprit has historically been habitat loss and degradation, many of the declines and extinctions are now being attributed to a rapidly dispersing infectious disease, which is causing population and species extinctions at an alarming rate.
The San Diego Zoo is committed to ensuring the survival of all amphibian species, and we are already an active force in amphibian conservation. Now, we are taking our efforts to the next level by engaging the public in learning about and supporting our critical work to prevent amphibian extinction.
